How to Fix Curb Rash on Rims: A Real-World Guide That Actually Works

Pulled up to a curb too close. Heard that grinding sound — the one that makes your stomach drop. Now there's a nice silver scrape across your rim staring at you every time you walk to the car.

Happens to everyone eventually. Not dangerous, but it'll drive you nuts.

Good news: fixable. Depending on severity, you might handle it yourself for under $50.

Assess the Damage First

Light scratches (Level 1). Surface scuffs you can feel with a fingernail but haven't gouged metal. Thirty-minute fix, tops.

Moderate scrapes (Level 2). Bare aluminum showing through. Maybe a quarter-inch deep. Still a DIY job, but more involved — figure an afternoon.

Deep gouges (Level 3). Chunks of the rim lip are visibly damaged, edge rough or jagged. You *can* attempt this at home. A professional will get better results. Your call.

Bent or cracked (Level 4). Stop here. Go to a wheel specialist. Bent rims cause vibration, uneven tire wear, and potential blowouts. Don't mess with structural damage.

DIY Fix: Level 1 and 2

Done this on my own wheels twice. Results were solid — not concours perfect, but 85–90% better, which is plenty for a daily driver.

Materials (~$30–60 at any auto parts store)

Sandpaper (80, 200, 400, 800, 2000-grit), Bondo or aluminum filler for deeper stuff, self-etching primer spray, matching wheel paint or metallic silver, clear coat, painter's tape, newspaper, rubbing compound, microfiber cloths, rubbing alcohol, disposable gloves.

The Process

1. Clean. Soap and water, then rubbing alcohol wipe-down. Every bit of brake dust and road grime needs to be gone. Contamination wrecks the repair. Five minutes.

2. Sand. 80-grit on the rough gouged areas — just knocking down jagged edges. Switch to 200-grit, feather out the transition between damaged and undamaged surface. Finish with 400-grit. Should feel smooth.

3. Fill (if needed). Anything deeper than a surface scratch gets Bondo. Mix according to directions and don't mix too much — it hardens fast. I ruined my first batch because I was slow applying it. Slightly overfill, let it cure 20–30 minutes.

4. Sand the filler. 200-grit to knock down high spots, then 400, 800, 2000. Yes, a lot of sanding. Each grit makes it smoother. Run your finger across — if you feel any ridge, keep going. This step makes or breaks everything.

5. Mask off. Tape the tire, valve stem, everything you don't want paint on. Use newspaper over the tire. Overspray on tires is annoying and stubborn.

6. Prime. Two light coats of self-etching primer. Ten minutes between coats. Light coats. Hold the can 8–10 inches away, smooth sweeping passes.

7. Paint. Three light coats. Fifteen minutes between each. Light. Heavy coats drip and drips look terrible.

Color matching is the hardest part. Metallic silver is pretty universal and forgiving. Dark painted or machined wheels? Much harder. Some auto paint shops custom-mix spray cans to your color for $20–30 — worth it if you want a close match.

8. Clear coat. Two coats after paint is dry. Same technique.

9. Finish. Wait 24 hours minimum for full cure. Rubbing compound on the repaired area to blend with surrounding finish. Makes a big difference. Pull off all the masking. Done.

When DIY Won't Cut It

Machined / diamond-cut wheels. That lathe-finished face with fine concentric lines — you cannot replicate this at home. A paint repair on a machined wheel looks obviously wrong. Professional refinishing: $75–150 per wheel.

Dark or colored finishes. Black, gunmetal, bronze — precise color matching requires professional spray equipment. Close isn't good enough when it's right next to original finish.

Multiple wheels. Three or four with curb rash? Refinish all four for consistency. Pro shops do a full set for $300–500 with basically factory results.

Chrome. Cannot fix at home. Chrome plating is electrochemical — specialized equipment only. Re-chroming runs $200–400 per wheel.

Professional Options

Mobile rim repair. They come to you with everything in a van. About an hour per wheel in your driveway. $75–150 depending on damage and finish. These services have gotten genuinely good in the last few years.

Wheel repair shops. CNC lathes, paint booths, powder coating. Best results. You're without the wheel 2–5 days. $100–200 per wheel.

Dealer refinishing. Good results. Dealer prices. $200–400 per wheel.

Repair vs Replace

Repair when: Damage is cosmetic only, one or two wheels affected, repair cost is under $150/wheel.

Replace when: Rim is bent or cracked, repair cost approaches replacement cost, you can't match the finish satisfactorily, or the rims are showing their age anyway.

Preventing Round Two

Rim guards. Rubber or plastic strips on the rim edge — RimBlades, AlloyGator, similar products. $30–60 for a set. They absorb curb contact before it reaches metal. Not invisible, but beats curb rash.

Parking awareness. Mirrors. Cameras if your car has them. Angle in slowly. Boring advice, but it works.

Skip tight spots. Nice rims + tight parking = regret. Extra 30-second walk beats a $150 repair.

Drive-throughs. I'm convinced drive-through lanes have destroyed more rims than actual curbs. Those narrow lanes with raised concrete edges are brutal.

The Short Version

Light damage? Sandpaper, paint, an afternoon. Moderate to heavy? Mobile repair service, $100–150, an hour of your time. If repair doesn't make sense economically, a replacement OEM rim gets you back to factory condition with zero compromise on finish matching.
